James Phillips
Media Relations

James Phillips is one of the most well-known sons of Walker County, having been in the public spotlight for decades.

James’ career in journalism led him to the publisher role at the county’s oldest news source, The Daily Mountain Eagle. During his time there, he led several initiatives to bring news and small-town story telling into the 21st century.

After a period of corporate change with the Eagle’s parent company and personal health issues, James co-founded The Community Journal, alongside employee-turned-friend, Ashlee Winborne.

In addition to being a founder of The Rural Alabama Resource Center, James can be heard every weekday on WJLX 101.5’s Live@9 as well as the voice of the station’s various sports coverage, including the Jasper Vikings and Bevill State Bears.

James has long been an outspoken ally of the LGBTQ+ community, being a voice for those who may not otherwise have one. However, he’s bridged the gap between the aisle, proving that our differences don’t have to divide us. Instead, those differences are what makes us stronger.
